Body Worlds

I had the opportunity to visit the Body Worlds museum at the Leonardo Saturday; what an amazing experience that was for me! If you go to the cite, there is a little video you can watch that will tell you a little bit about it. I got a little preview of the exhibit in Chicago when I was there for choir tour and I wondered if I would be ever to see the whole thing again. I thought the whole thing fascinating in a different sort of way. Yes it was a little creepy knowing everything in there was real...just plastinated, but I was intrigued. At the beginning of the museum they gave you this little book to right down some interesting facts and quotes, and here are a couple that I was able to jot down.

  • The muscle that lets your eye blink is the fastest muscle in your body. It allows you to blink 5 times a second. On average, you blink 15 000 times a day. Women blink twice as much as men
  • Lance Armstrong's heart is 30% bigger than the average human heart
  • Red blood cells are warn out after 120 days
  • " It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye." -Antoinedo de Saint Exupery
  • Your heart pumps around 1800 gallons of blood a day
  • A newborn baby's head accounts for one-quarter of its weight
  • It takes about 72 muscles to produce human speech
  • During a 24 hour period the average human with breathe 23,040 times
  • The smallest bone is the 'stirrup,' deep in the ear. It is hardly larger than a grain of rice
  • There are about 60 muscles in the face. Smiling is easier than frowning. It takes 20 muscles to smile and over 40 to frown
  • About 8 million blood cells die in the human body every second, and the same number are born each second

Now for those who are interested in this kind of thing, I highly recommend it! I think it is there in Salt Lake till January. They didn't allow any flash photography, but here are some pictures that I was able to find online of some of the things that we saw.

This one is my favorite! I don't know how they did it but it's the blood vessels of the head
